27 Mar Case Update: Former Governor Matt Bevin Found in Contempt of Court

On Tuesday, March 24, former Kentucky governor Matt Bevin was found in contempt of court and sentenced to 60 days in jail. As has been recently reported by both local news sources (WDRB, Kentucky Lantern) and nationally by the New York Times, Matt Bevin was ordered to provide financial documentation as part of a Family Court case involving his adopted son and Helmers + Associates client Jonah Bevin. Jonah is seeking child support as a result of his mistreatment and abandonment by the Bevins. Tuesday’s hearing was supposed to address Jonah’s request, but Matt Bevin’s refusal to provide thorough financial documentation — again, despite Judge Johnson’s order to do so — delayed a decision yet again.

As of today, March 27, Matt Bevin has requested and the Court of Appeals has issued a temporary reprieve and set aside the arrest order. For more information on the appellate order, check out this Kentucky Lantern article published today. That article in addition to the reporting linked above gives a thorough explanation of the case’s current status and background, including quotes from our own attorneys Melina Hettiaratchi and John Helmers, Jr., who are continuing to work diligently on Jonah’s case.
